UX Designer

Flox is a developer-first Series A startup backed by top-tier VCs and trusted by Fortune 100 engineering teams. We're redefining how modern software is built, tested, and shipped. A lot of this is powered by Nix, one of the world’s largest open-source projects—and we’re bringing its power to the broader developer community through intuitive, cohesive tools.

We blend open-source culture with product excellence to deliver a generational shift in how software gets delivered. If you’re excited by the idea of combining technical depth with product simplicity, Flox is the place to do it.

Minimal travel required (<10%), mainly for occasional conferences or company offsites.

About the Role

We're looking for a UX Designer & Researcher who thrives on building intuitive, elegant workflows helping developers and operators across a variety of surfaces—not just GUIs, but CLI tools and developer APIs. You will help define the product’s feel, from a user’s very first five minutes through advanced workflows.

You’re a good fit if you're curious, love systems thinking, and aren't afraid of command-line interfaces or APIs. You know how to synthesize technical constraints and user needs into coherent, testable flows.

What You'll Do

  • Design end-to-end user experiences across CLI, web, and API-based workflows.

  • Define and deliver an amazing onboarding experience that resonates with developers and platform engineers that decreases time to value.

  • Research and validate adoption journeys and optimize workflows to guide users toward successful outcomes utilizing Flox technology.

  • Drive product design from concept through execution, working closely with engineering and product.

  • Contribute to the UX and product strategy across our commercial and open-source offerings.

  • Optimize command line interface options, workflows and sub commands via a shell interface.

  • Collect and synthesize feedback and research from a wide range of users—including enterprise and OSS contributors.

  • Use prototypes, wireframes, and user research to test and validate design choices.

  • Articulate design decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with product partners to translate research insights into clear user needs and workflows.

  • Maintain and evolve our design system over time.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 5+ years in UX/product design, product management, or similar roles.

  • Experience designing for technical audiences—especially developers.

  • Strong portfolio showcasing end-to-end product thinking and design execution.

  • Proven ability to balance product vision with iterative delivery.

  • Experience shipping products across multiple platforms (linux shell, web, desktop, CLI, API,etc.).

  • Proficiency in Figma or equivalent design/prototyping tools.

  • Comfort collaborating directly with engineers, product leads, and open-source communities.

Nice-to-Have

  • Background in software development or systems thinking (CLI or API fluency is a plus).

  • Experience with developer tools, DevOps, or infrastructure products.

  • Exposure to or interest in Nix, Linux tooling, or package managers.

  • Startup or open-source contributor experience.

  • Familiarity with security, compliance, or policy-driven design.

  • A willingness to Karaoke

Why Flox?

  • We work at the intersection of open source and commercial impact.

  • You’ll influence UX across an entire developer platform—from APIs to UIs to terminal workflows.

  • You’ll join a small, high-trust, deeply technical team building for other deeply technical teams.
