We’re seeking a skilled Product Designer to collaborate on the design of Common, our platform that visualizes networks of solidarity economy funders, organizations, and networks to facilitate collaboration, resource movement, and democratic governance. This is an exciting opportunity to create meaningful, beautiful experiences that serve community-led economic transformation.

We’re looking for someone who combines excellent visual craft with deep product thinking, someone who can move fluidly among brand design, product design, and user research while maintaining design excellence across all touchpoints.

What is One Project?

One Project is a nonprofit social venture. We’re building the infrastructure for a new kind of economy — one that benefits everyone. Communities worldwide are already creating alternatives to outdated economic systems that prioritize profit over people and the planet. One Project provides the technology and nurtures the network of alternatives, laying the groundwork for a sustainable, community-driven future.

Why do we need a new economy?

Today’s current economic systems reward profit over people and the planet. This misaligned incentive structure drives the current global polycrisis. At One Project we spent our first few years researching these interlinked challenges and realized that we need to address the root cause: we need a new economy with different incentives.

Our history and role

We are not alone in this realization. All around the world, there is a growing ecosystem of communities, movements, and experts who are already working towards a just transition to a new economy. We launched in 2021 with a focus on listening to and supporting these change-makers, and today One Project is a leading grantmaker in the new economy space.

Our current direction is the outcome of what we heard from more than 300 field leaders, dozens of leading organizations, and extensive in-house research: One Project’s role is to build shared infrastructure and a network to move resources to community control. We call this infrastructure

What is Common?

Common is a collectively governed technical infrastructure that enables a thriving global network of people, projects, and polities to successfully coordinate the world’s resources in service of democratically determined goals. This helps build power for the transition to a new economy.

What You’ll Do

Core Product Design (60-70%)

• Design and execute features for the Common platform, from concept to pixel-perfect implementation

• Create compelling visual designs that balance aesthetic excellence with functional clarity

• Contribute to and help maintain a comprehensive design system that scales across our ecosystem

• Conduct co-design sessions with community stakeholders, ensuring their voices shape our platform

• Execute user research initiatives, including interviews, usability testing, and synthesis of findings

• Collaborate closely with engineers to ensure design fidelity in implementation

• Design for accessibility, ensuring WCAG 2.1 AA compliance across all experiences

• Prototype interactions and micro-animations that bring delight to the user experience

• Document design decisions and create guidelines for consistent implementation

Brand and Marketing Design (30-40%)

• Create brand and marketing materials that communicate our mission and values

• Design organizational collateral, including identity systems, research reports, website updates, etc.

• Balance multiple design requests from across the organization while maintaining quality and brand consistency

• Network member profiles and organizational pages

• Trust, endorsement, and reputation systems

• Community onboarding and discovery experiences

• Mobile-responsive designs for global accessibility

• Brand expressions across digital and print touchpoints

You may be the candidate we’re looking for if you bring…

Core Experience

• 6+ years of product design experience with a portfolio demonstrating exceptional visual craft and brand design capability

• Excellence in typography, color theory, layout, and visual hierarchy

• Deep expertise in modern design tools and prototyping

• Strong background in creating and maintaining scalable design systems

• End-to-end product design experience with complex software applications from concept to launch; ideally from product companies where you’ve experienced the feedback loop of interaction and improvement

• Experience with co-design methodologies and participatory design processes

• Experience conducting user research and translating insights into design decisions

• Ability to handle generalist design requests while maintaining focus on core product work

• Excellent communication skills with the ability to articulate design decisions to diverse stakeholders

• Comfort working in ambiguous environments with evolving requirements

Preferred Experiences

• Understanding of democratic governance and alternative economics

• Background in designing for social impact or community-driven platforms

• Proficiency with AI-assisted design and development tools

• Experience with motion design and micro-interactions

• Experience with accessibility-first design approaches

• Familiarity with modern development workflows and the ability to collaborate in technical environments

• Experience designing financial or transactional interfaces

• Experience working with distributed, global communities

Collaboration Requirements

• Availability for synchronous work between 10 am-1 pm and 2 pm-4 pm EST, at minimum

• Regular check-ins with head of product and product team

• Attendance at key weekly product team meetings, plus others as needed

• Design collaboration and feedback sessions

• Participation in user testing and feedback cycles

• Documentation of key technical decisions

• Knowledge transfer for future development

• Adherence to One Project’s Information Security & Technology Policies, including guidelines on the use of AI tools and LLMs

• Support for our ethical open code approach, helping balance openness with mission protection
