Location: Palo Alto, CA

U.S. citizenship required and the ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance is highly desired.

Rhombus Power seeks a highly motivated UI/UX Designer to build intuitive interfaces that allow users to explore complex datasets and make critical decisions quickly. This role is perfect for someone who thrives at the intersection of product design, engineering, and mission impact, and is excited to build tools that change how critical policy and operational decisions are made.

Our products help government and policy leaders understand complex data, explore scenarios, and make better strategic decisions. This role is primarily design-focused, responsible for shaping user experience, workflows, and interaction design for data-driven applications. The ideal candidate combines strong product and UX thinking with enough front-end fluency to prototype ideas and collaborate effectively with engineering teams. Startup experience is highly desirable.

What You’ll Do

  • Architect, build, and iterate on user-facing features across Rhombus’ flagship platforms, supporting both domestic and international clients.
  • Design it. We’re relying on you to quickly and seamlessly translate complex workflows into clear, beautiful, and functional interfaces that drive decisions at the highest levels.
  • Drive it, and fast. Partner with designers, UI team, data teams, engineering teams, product analysts, and backend engineers to refine prototypes, define APIs, and ship impactful product experiences quickly and iteratively.
  • Evolve it. Lead by action, and thereby drive the evolution of our design systems to ensure scalable, accessible, and visually consistent UIs across Rhombus products.
  • Fix it. Proactively identify UX/UI gaps and propose improvements to elevate the end-to-end product experience. Champion UI/UX best practices throughout the entire product lifecycle.
  • Explore it. Create and maintain robust documentation for design specifications, components, and reusable patterns.

Who You Are

  • A systems-minded designer: You bring a deep understanding of systems engineering and especially how humans interact with complex platforms. Whether from a top-tier design consultancy or product-led tech company, you’ve designed elegant interfaces at scale — balancing technical depth with intuitive user experience.
  • You lead with initiative, are hands-on with delivery, and don’t shirk debugging — you welcome it, and drive yourself and the team to improve.
  • A mission-driven builder: You care deeply about impact. You understand that good design in the national security space is not just about aesthetics — it’s about clarity, speed, and trust.
  • A collaborator: You thrive working cross-functionally with engineering, product, leadership, and customers. You bring ideas to the table and help others sharpen theirs.

Required Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of experience as an UI/UX Designer or a Product Designer for complex web applications in SaaS tech.
  • Exceptional expertise with modern design tools such as Figma (preferred), Sketch, Framer, Axure, etc. and a strong understanding of information architecture, interaction design, and visual design principles.
  • Experience using design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or similar. Familiarity with CSS preprocessors like SCSS and frameworks like Tailwind or Bootstrap.
  • Competency in version control tools like Git, and familiarity with agile workflows.
  • Experience working with or building design systems, and maintaining reusable components, and you understand the importance of DRY in design systems.
  • Portfolio clearly demonstrating interface designs and interaction flows, UX thinking. Bonus for pet projects showing your personal design sensibilities and chops.
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a U.S. government security clearance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks like React (Angular/Vue also considered)
  • Experience with graphing libraries (e.g., HighCharts), and/or interactive mapping tools
  • Familiarity with component library tools like Blueprint or Storybook
  • A hybrid technologist and creative: You can take a Figma prototype and translate it into pixel-perfect, performant code — but you also know when to iterate on the design itself.
  • Prior experience in a high-security, defense, or intelligence environment is highly desired!
  • Understanding of generative AI UI trends and how to embed intuitive human-in-the-loop or assistive/agentic experiences

Salary Range

  • The estimated base salary range for this position is $80,000 to $135,000/year
