Product Designer

Crisis Text Line

Description

Location: New York City strongly preferred

Crisis Text Line is a nonprofit tech company working to disrupt the mental health space by providing free, 24/7 text-based crisis support. We’ve built a suite of tools to engage with people in crisis via SMS, Facebook Messenger, and other messaging applications using standard, open web technologies. Every decision we make and every product we build is about helping people in pain at scale. Learn more about the platform here.

Crisis Text Line has experienced impressive organic growth. We’ve processed nearly 150 million messages in 6 years, grown from a team of three to over 100 full time employees, and trained over 30,000 volunteers. In the next few years, we will continue to expand our offerings to serve people around the globe.

Crisis Text Line is looking for a product designer who is excited to participate in the creation of new products and features that help save lives at scale. Successful applicants will have experience conducting user research, a solid understanding of interface and interaction design, and excellent communication skills.

What you’ll do as an product designer:

  • User research. You’ll work with product managers, your manager, and other stakeholders to identify when to gather feedback from users to drive more effective decision-making. You’ll craft surveys and interactive prototypes that yield actionable feedback, and iterate accordingly.
  • Interface design. You’ll use tools like typography, contrast, and scale to organize information in our products. You’ll distill complex ideas into intuitive, scalable interfaces that balance clarity with delight.
  • Interaction design. You’ll apply research and industry best practices to make our user experiences clear, efficient, and enjoyable.
  • Presentation. You’ll advocate for your solutions and clearly explain your reasoning, aided by thoughtfully selected visuals.
  • Documentation. You’ll document your work so that we can continue to move quickly as we grow, using tools like Figma and Adobe XD to maintain consistent libraries of UI patterns.

Types of product design challenges you may work on:

  • How can we use design as a retention tool for our volunteers?
  • How can we surface notifications in a more consistent, intuitive way?
  • What would a training version of our product look like?
  • How can we make it easier for our Crisis Counselors to keep track of many conversations at once? Location: New York City strongly preferred
