Design jobs at Convoy

Convoy

Convoy is transforming the $800 billion trucking industry, where even 10 years ago, most truck drivers did not have smartphones and paper driver logs were common. In 2015, Convoy launched the digital freight movement with an open and fully connected marketplace for brands and manufacturers to work directly with freight carriers who move truckload shipments throughout the country. This ‘Digital Freight Network’ is powered by machine learning and automation, and supported by a broad, ever-growing set of features that benefit both sides of the marketplace.

We’ve been honored to work with some great companies, such as Unilever, The Home Depot, and Procter & Gamble. We’ve also been backed by world-class investors, including Google, YCombinator, Fidelity, Greylock, Generation IM, Lone Pine, T. Rowe Price, Baillie Gifford and the founders and CEOs of Amazon, Salesforce, eBay, LinkedIn, Expedia, Dropbox, Starbucks, and others. We are proud to have been named a CNBC Disruptor 50 Winner (3x), a Fast Company World Changing Idea, a LinkedIn Top Startup, a Forbes' Best Startup Employer, one of Fortune Magazine's 'Impact 20' list, a best place to work in Washington State, a BloombergNEF Pioneer winner, and more.

This is your opportunity to collaborate with an incredible group of people and help transform the freight industry. Join Convoy and help us transport the world with endless capacity and zero waste.

About you:

We are growing our team! At Convoy, you'll learn about the unique challenges in logistics and over-the-road freight. You'll collaborate with a diverse team to build solutions that solve real problems in trucking and freight.

As Principal Researcher, you are the voice of the customer. Working with cross functional partners, you'll help define and inform our strategy and product roadmap. You’ll lead our research practice - exploring new approaches and establishing best practices.

You’ll work with the team to help solve complex problems. Combine your passion for the human perspective with your expertise with research methods to develop insights that are meaningful and actionable.

Working with carrier-facing (truck driver) product and business teams, you'll be supporting one of our highest priority areas. Your work will inform how our product and service work. You will develop a deep knowledge of our customer’s needs and where Convoy can deliver value. You will work alongside a strong team of product leaders, designers, and research scientists to inform and strategize solutions that raise the bar for the industry.

You will:

Raise the Bar - Your focus is hands-on, helping the team consistently deliver high quality work:
  • Conduct generative and evaluative user research using techniques such as rapid ethnography, interviewing, heuristic analysis, participatory design, and concept value testing.
  • Conduct secondary research, including trends analysis and other forms of industry research, to rapidly develop an understanding of complex challenges, and be able to reflect that understanding to the team.
  • Synthesize insights from primary and secondary research, present them in a compelling but thorough way, and turn them into design inspiration.
  • Apply iterative evaluation techniques to help the team optimize concepts for the best possible experience.
  • Work collaboratively with designers and other researchers to develop innovative solutions to a wide variety of problems.

One team - Everyone at Convoy has a role in making our culture the best it can be. That starts with getting involved:

  • Develop a point of view that elevates the thinking across the team.
  • Adapt to the situation, striking the right balance between the need for strong academic rigor and using your intuition, to quickly move through all stages of research.
  • Contribute to a variety activities and initiatives that stretch beyond research into strategy and design.
  • Be a strong communicator, confident presenter, and compelling storyteller.
  • Champion diversity and inclusion; proactively seeking out diverse perspectives, talents, and embracing of different styles of contribution.
  • Growth mindset; seeking feedback, self-reflection and the willingness to ask for help.

We're looking for someone who has:

  • 8+ years of experience in human-centered design, product design, or innovation as a design researcher or design strategist
  • Demonstrated mastery of multiple qualitative / quantitative research methods, with deep expertise in at least one focus area (e.g. ethnography, design research, etc.). You can demonstrate this experience through a portfolio of work.
  • Expertise with design thinking methods and processes
  • Exceptional verbal, writing and presentation skills
  • Ability to travel as required by project work (5-10%)

Work from where you work best:

If nothing else, Covid has revealed the amazing adaptability of our teams to work remotely while retaining a strong sense of collaboration. Post Covid, Convoy will continue in a hybrid work model with a combination of in-office and work-from-home. So though in-person work or travel may be needed from time to time given project needs, relocating to Seattle is not a requirement for this position as long as you are in one of our remote eligible locations.

Benefits:
Employees' wellbeing is top of mind for the Convoy team. Outside of offering excellent medical, dental, and vision benefits, we also offer the following:
  • On demand mental and emotional health benefits through Lyra
  • On demand primary care through 98.6
  • Generous paid time off
  • Paid parental leave program
  • Fertility benefit solutions via Progyny
  • Child-care and adult/elder-care options through Bright Horizons
  • Opportunity to join and contribute to one of our Employee Resource Groups
  • Ability to make a real world impact!
