Wonder is hiringUX/UI Design Lead
About Us
Imagine: 30 unique restaurants to order from, brought to your door in under 30 minutes. That’s what our customers experience.
At Wonder, we want to make world-class food within reach, no matter where you live. That’s why we’ve created a vertically integrated, new standard of dining that will allow you to enjoy menus from award-winning chefs and iconic restaurants across the country, all in one place. Our elevated brick + mortar locations will offer pick up and dine in options, as well as delivery to your home.
As a food-tech startup backed by top-tier venture capitalists and led by a team of experienced entrepreneurs—including some of the most accomplished leaders in the technology, culinary, and logistics industries—we’re growing. Join us in pioneering a new category of dining called “Fast-Fine”, and revolutionizing the way people eat.
About the role
Food is the core of Wonder’s business. To achieve “world-class food within reach”, Wonder completely owns the entire food process from ideation of a dish to delivering that dish to our customers. This role is the first design hire in a product group that owns multiple home-grown software products and systems to support the end-to-end creation, production and delivery of our food. This is a long-term opportunity to grow into a design leader within the company and a manager of junior designers as we continue to build out the overall product team.
Your stakeholders:
- R&D team. They create the dishes and engineer food production processes specifically designed for our cooking systems.
- Culinary Production team. Produces our food at scale, on time and at cost in our central commissary.
- Line Cooks. Responsible for delivering the end result to our customers at our restaurants. Half of their job is cooking, while the other half is inventory management.
The products:
- Cookbook. A critical backbone to our culinary intellectual property and to our entire operations is our recipe data. Cookbook is our centralized recipe data tool, which powers the entire lifecycle of our operations – from R&D entering initial recipe drafts to detailed manufacturing specifications for our central commissary to basic cooking instructions for chefs within our brick + mortar locations. The data created and managed in Cookbook powers all our downstream systems. The objective is to design a tool that is usable by non-technical folks yet outputs accurate technical manufacturing specifications. You will also tackle key design challenges unique to our business such as designing a workflow to create and manage multiple versions of recipes.
- SPORK is our commissary kitchen management tool and interactive touchscreen application for chefs. SPORK provides executive chefs the data and tools to manage their kitchens’ tasks for the day and guides individual production chefs though the cooking and assembly processes while capturing key operational data such as yields, and time spent per recipe. Cookbook provides the recipe data that powers SPORK. The objective is to design an interface that provides clear instructions and captures critical operational data with minimal user interaction.
- Pantry. Our mobile + web-based inventory management tool for our restaurants. Inventory is the backbone of our operations. Without food on-hand at our restaurants, we have no business! Our restaurants handle an order of magnitude more distinct SKUs (500+) vs. our competitors (~60). As a result we need custom-built software to support the inventory management complexity. This includes a mobile app to do inventory movements and reconciliation used by our line cooks plus a web-based tool to understand current inventory health, gain insights and do some management tasks used by our managers.
As the first Wonder product design lead for this team, you will...
- Develop your own point of view of what success means for a given initiative and test that perspective against the knowledge of your colleagues and the data that have been gathered
- Work with multiple Product Managers across our products to execute on design tasks and work through UX improvements to iteratively improve usability and product satisfaction
- Develop designs and clickable prototypes in Figma
- Tackle complex and ambiguous projects, collaborating with Research, Product Management, Engineering and Business partners to understand your users and collect data needed to make critical design decisions
- Own and enhance our existing operations product design system, working collaboratively with our front-end developers
- Balance art and science, knowing when to invest in UX testing vs when to lean on your expertise, but also being bold enough to take big, calculated risks
The experience you have
- 6+ years of experience in an individual contributor role, designing end-to-end web and/or desktop applications
- 2+ years of experience managing or mentoring junior designers
- Bachelor's degree in a related or technical field
- An outstanding portfolio, highlighting a foundation in Typography, Interaction Design, and Ideation
- Experience working on data-heavy or operational-heavy products
- Experience partnering with Product Managers and UX researchers to develop the strategy and rationale for features
- Fluency in Figma and prototyping tools
The way you work
We’re in the very early days of our company. This is a startup culture in a hyper growth environment. For us, that means designers are given a lot of ownership and responsibility. As a product designer, you will thrive if you...
- Can effectively organize and communicate your thoughts to cross-functional team members, users, and stakeholders
- Enjoy interacting with your users regularly
- Enjoy collaborating with your product and engineering counterparts in a zero-ego environment
- Can manage multiple initiatives concurrently
- Have a solid understanding of design principles and how to create modular designs
- Have no trouble designing interfaces within the framework of a design system, knowing when to be rigid and when to be flexible
Benefits
