Used by over 25% of the Fortune 100 to transform how they operate, Varjo is known for virtual and mixed reality that look and feel as real as the real world, allowing training astronauts and fighter jet pilots, designing cars, and conducting pioneering medical research across virtual environments. Founded in 2016, Varjo now operates in over 40 countries worldwide with 200 employees in offices in Helsinki and Washington D.C.

Our multicultural team consists of talents from all around the world, and our daily working language is English. We believe in the power of diversity – where different experiences, backgrounds, and ideas drive innovation and results.

Job Description

As our UX Writer, you will write user interface copytexts and user guides across all Varjo products and services. In practice, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining our online and printed user guidance, and the UI texts for our user interfaces from desktop and VR to mobile apps and web. You will play a key role in shaping our tone of voice and how we communicate our products to customers. In our highly technical field, where new concepts and features constantly emerge, your task will be to find the best ways to introduce and explain this technology to our end users and the wider global market.

You will join our Design and Research team, where you will work together with our industrial designers, UX and UI designers, and design researchers. You will  also work closely with other Varjo teams in product management, engineering, customer support, and marketing to coordinate copywriting and documentation needs. You will write production-ready US English, which is our master documentation language, and coordinate the necessary language translations for user interfaces and printed guides together with our localization partners. We expect that you have skills in managing multiple ongoing projects and your own flow of tasks, and are equipped with a curious and proactive approach to work.

What you’ll be doing

  • Write end-user documentation, including getting started guides, installation guides, FAQs, and release notes.
  • Write copytexts for application user interfaces, including onboarding instructions, error messages and notifications, labels, and modals.
  • Publish regular updates to our end-user documentation online.
  • Coordinate text translations with our partner network.
  • Collaborate on content creation, terminology, and tone of voice with other Varjo teams responsible of customer-facing communications, including developer documentation, customer support, and marketing materials.
  • Maintain and develop guidelines for consistent language across all Varjo products and services.

Our expectations

  • Relevant theoretical and practical skills in writing professional, production-ready US English. University-level studies in English would be an asset for this role.
  • Skills in project coordination and managing timelines and deliverables.
  • Proactiveness and interest in keeping up to date with the field of mixed reality technology, and a creative mindset in finding ways to translate technical concepts and engineering jargon to human-understandable language for our end users.
  • Prior experience in copywriting or UI design is an advantage but not a strict requirement.
  • Experience of using some web-based content management platform (for example, WordPress or HubSpot) or willingness to learn it on the job. Knowledge of basic HTML syntax beyond WYSIWYG editors is an advantage and will allow you to be more flexible in maintaining the online documentation.
  • Proficiency in one or more languages in which we currently provide our user guidance – French, German, Spanish, Italian, Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese (Taiwan), Hebrew, Arabic – is an advantage.

This is a hands-on role in our Helsinki-based Design and Research team. Succeeding in your job will require regular visits to our office in Helsinki to test our new products and features. Our team works in a hybrid mode, and part of the work can be done remotely. Full remote work is not possible in this role.
