Laurel's Mission to Return Time

We’re a team that is connected by time. Life has taught us its true value and finite nature. We value every minute and are on a mission to return time. And we live and breathe that mission in everything we do — from how we build our product that saves our customers time to how we operate as a company.

Come work with a team that’s intelligent yet humble, visionary yet gets things done. A team that’s only getting started at cracking a problem that affects every person who uses a screen to work.

Come build a company that will stand the test of time as we look to understand time itself.

We all waste a staggering amount of time at work (~33%) because we have no idea where we are spending it. Worse yet, we continue to operate in a factory model that simply does not apply to creative work. Our big bet is that by understanding time, we’ll be able to move away from it as a unit of value. In the future knowledge economy (lawyers, accountants, engineers), contributions will be assessed on value added, not the underlying time spent adding it.

Ambitious mission to say the least, so where are we starting? We have created a new market category called Time Automation that automates the timekeeping process for professionals and allows us to collect time data at scale. Before Laurel, professionals had to manually record every six minutes of their day into antiquated timekeeping software. Not anymore. We are moving away from a world in which humans tell a machine what they did at work, to our version of the world in which the machine tells the human.

We are looking for individuals who share our passion of returning time. Come join us on our journey as we spend time solving time.  It will be a long road but if we’re even half right, we’ll change the way work is measured and performed forever.

Why You Should Be Excited About Laurel:

  • First-Mover Advantage: We stand as the global first movers in applying AI to time within professional services.

  • Expertise in Technology and Domain: Our experience encompasses the development and deployment of AI tools tailored for professional services over many learnings.

  • World-Class Team: We've assembled a team consisting of some of the foremost talents in AI, product development, and engineering within the tech industry.

  • Mission-Driven Organization: Our overarching mission revolves around restoring time to the global community, empowering individuals to focus on the three hours of impactful work each day while giving the remainder back to society.

  • Laurel’s AI-Time software has applications across many different verticals — with our initial foothold being enterprises in the professional services industry. This is a complex product that requires AI, a simple yet intuitive user experience, an agent and cloud-based integrations to capture a professional’s digital footprint, and integrations into firms’ billing and accounting systems.

Type: Hybrid, 3 days in-office per week

About Laurel

At Laurel, we are revolutionizing timekeeping for professional services with our innovative AI-powered solutions. We believe that leveraging data effectively is key to our growth and success. To that end, we’re building a new Data Product that brings those insights to life through intuitive, powerful visualizations for professional services teams. We’re looking for a world-class designer who can help us craft beautiful, understandable, and trustworthy data experiences.

Mission

Bring Laurel’s data to life through rich, interactive visualizations and seamless UX design—making complex insights simple, engaging, and valuable for our customers.

Role Summary

As a Staff Full Stack UX Designer, you will lead design efforts for our most ambitious new product: Laurel’s Data Product. You will translate data visualizations and analysis, user research, and product strategy into clear, compelling visual stories. You’ll own the end-to-end design process, from discovery to delivery, and collaborate with PMs, data scientists, and engineers to ship beautiful, production-grade data interfaces.

We’re especially interested in candidates who thrive in early-stage environments and love designing for complex systems—and who bring a keen eye for data storytelling.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Data Visualization & Design

    • Design interactive dashboards, charts, and exploratory tools that help users understand complex data insights.

    • Translate data into compelling visual narratives that enable business decision-making.

    • Design thoughtful, visually compelling data experiences within Business Intelligence (BI) tools, with an eye toward scalability and future custom front-end implementations. Develop flexible design patterns that work seamlessly across both embedded BI environments and bespoke product interfaces.

  1. User-Centered Design Process

    • Conduct user research, testing, and interviews across all of Laurel’s user personas: timekeepers, billing/admin staff, and Firm Leaders.

    • Create user journeys, personas, wireframes, and prototypes across fidelity levels.

    • Validate designs through usability tests and iterate based on feedback.

  1. Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Partner with Product, Engineering, Data Scientists, Customer Experience, and Sales teams to support analytics and insights

    • Present design concepts to both internal and external stakeholders

  1. Design Systems & Implementation

    • Design clear, effective data visualizations using BI tools in the near term—working within the tool's capabilities while elevating the user experience.

    • Extend Laurel’s design system with reusable patterns that support both BI-embedded workflows and future custom-built interfaces.

    • When appropriate, collaborate with engineers to implement designs using front-end technologies (e.g., React, D3).

    • Build lightweight prototypes (e.g., in Figma) to validate concepts and guide development.

Skills and Experience

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in relevant fields

  • Experience: 6+ years of professional Design experience. Ideal candidates will be comfortable working with Data Analytics products.

    • 6+ years of experience designing digital products, with a strong focus on dashboards, data-heavy interfaces, or analytics tools.

    • Hands-on experience designing directly within BI tools (e.g., Thoughtspot, PowerBI, Omni) or other low-code data platforms

    • Ability to navigate ambiguous problems and design across both short-term constraints and long-term product vision.

    • Proven track record of taking product concepts from early exploration to high-fidelity interactive prototypes

    • Understanding of data design principles (e.g., clarity, integrity, avoiding misleading visuals).

    • Demonstrated ability to code using AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, GitHub Copilot, Cursor) to build interactive prototypes or front-end components quickly and independently

    • Familiarity with front-end development workflows (e.g., collaborating on React components or preparing dev-ready specs).

  • Bonus:

    • Experience with knowledge worker productivity tools

    • Ability to write or modify front-end code (e.g., editing or assembling UI components in React, JavaScript)

    • Experience designing for AI-powered tools or automated workflows.

    • Familiarity with modern data visualization libraries (e.g., D3.js)

    • Familiarity with BI tools (e.g., Thoughtspot, PowerBI, Tableau).

  • Soft Skills:

    • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.

    • Ability to work in a fast-paced startup environment and manage multiple priorities.

What Success Looks Like

  • 2025Q3: First customer-ready launch of Laurel’s Data Product, with interactive dashboards designed in close partnership with end users.

  • EOY 2025: Laurel Data Product GA supporting $2.5M ARR.

Why Join Laurel?

  • Contribute to groundbreaking AI-powered solutions for professional services.

  • Be part of a mission-driven team with ambitious goals.

  • Collaborate with talented professionals in a dynamic, innovative startup environment.
