As a Principal Researcher at MetaLab you will be a beacon for UX research excellence. Principals are important members of the research leadership team, so not only will you execute high-quality work on complex projects, you’ll also use your expertise to help the research team level up.

Principals at MetaLab are looked up to, often acting as teachers or compasses, pointing teams in the right direction. This will look like applying your research expertise on MetaLab’s most complex projects, informal mentoring of more junior team members, hosting lunch and learn sessions on important topics related to UX research, and helping the Research Director identify opportunities for team Learning & Development.

Responsibilities:

Project work:

  • Identifying the research needs for projects as they kick off
  • Creating research plans and clearly outlining roles and responsibilities for yourself and other cross-functional team members
  • Programming, moderating, and reporting back on various types of user research, such as surveys, interviews, and usability studies
  • Collaborating with design to form well-validated recommendations for the product or project based on what you learned in research
  • Presenting clear, succinct, and actionable findings to stakeholders
  • Being available throughout projects as a resource for the teams around any sort of user questions

Team responsibilities:

  • Informally mentoring more junior researchers
  • Hosting UX research office hours so other disciplines can nab some of your time for consultation
  • Teaching others about UX research in a way that suits your style, be it lunch and learns, blog posts, or Loom videos

The must-have shortlist

  • 6+ years of experience with UX research
  • Interest or experience in teaching others about UX research
  • Ability to manage complex stakeholder environments
  • Ability to navigate all types of user research both in person, online, one-on-one and in larger group situations
  • Experience developing JTBDs, personas, and/or user journeys
  • Product background or ability to understand complex product concepts
  • Ability to distill data and provide clear and actionable recommendations to the product team
  • Experience collaborating with other disciplines (design, product, engineering) to come up with the best path forward and help other folks understand the rationale

  • Adaptability — we often we  work with first-to-market products, and we need to apply research tactics flexibly to understand user needs and product opportunities
  • Succinctness — the most important thing for our cross-functional collaborators is really clear, concise user pain points that can be solved by amazing product design
  • Striving — for growth, for learning, for best practices
  • Experience with large-scale surveys and analytics an asset
  • Agency or consulting experience an asset
