This position is responsible for helping mold the future of Laurel Springs School as an online, private high school that delivers learning experiences in new and innovative ways. One of the primary responsibilities is helping to build and support next-generation digital experiences for our students and parents.

 

Under minimal supervision, this position is responsible for designing an engaging, effective, and accessible user experience for Laurel Springs website, educational platforms, and products.

Primary accountabilities

  • Creates systematic and scalable digital design frameworks for applications and platforms based on an existing and evolving style guide. Deliverables may include pixel-level mockups, site maps, user flows, conceptual designs, wireframes, and prototypes with detailed functional specifications.
  • Provides design leadership from conception to deployment by gathering and clarifying requirements, coordinating deliverables, and engaging with necessary stakeholders.
  • Builds a library of reusable and scalable patterns, design styles and creates processes to maintain consistency of the brand look/feel across a large-scale platform.
  • Works closely with Director of Digital Experience to understand parent and student needs, user needs, validate product direction, and fine-tune design.
  • Advocates a user-centered design approach and process to developers and business stakeholders. Works with multidisciplinary teams from design, product management, development, and business to ensure successful development of a holistic solution that benefits our users - students, parents’ faculty, and educational staff.
  • Conducts usability reviews, such as heuristic evaluations and cognitive walkthroughs at various stages of the design and development cycle.
  • Contributes as part of a highly collaborative team to listen effectively, respect others’ perspectives and contributions, and offer and accept feedback openly.
  • May provide direction and support to junior designers to orient them and increase their understanding of more complex web design issues.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

 

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and guidelines of interaction design, visual design, information architecture and usability. Familiarity with ADA accessibility guidelines and design strategies.
  • Conceptual understanding of user experience research methods and the benefit of conducting user research early and often.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively interact with business and development teams. Ability to explain design decisions and rationale to a non-design audience.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and work well in multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • An Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (preferred) in Digital Design, Human Factors, Marketing, Experience Design, Human-Computer Interaction, or an equivalent combination of formal education and directly related experience.
  • Two to four (2-4) years of experience as a user interaction (UI) designer, visual designer, or user experience (UX) designer in a high-tech environment.
  • Proficiency with design and prototyping tools like OmniGraffle, Axure, Figma, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator or similar tools.
  • Conceptual understanding of various web-related technologies including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and mobile platforms
