UX/UI Designer – AI SaaS Platform for Transport

Perth-based (or remote with a strong plan for user engagement in Perth) Casual or fixed-term contract

Join the Planning and Transport Research Centre (PATREC) at The University of Western Australia, where cutting-edge AI research meets real-world impact – from Perth to the world.

We’re building RoadSense Analytics (RSA), a next-generation video analytics SaaS platform transforming how road safety, congestion, and transport planning decisions are made. After years of pioneering R&D, we’re now moving into deployment and scaling.

This is a rare opportunity to take complex data — from near misses and vehicle trajectories to congestion patterns — and make it clear, intuitive, and actionable for transport professionals. Your designs will directly help cities and agencies build smarter, safer, and more sustainable transport systems.

What you’ll do

  • Lead the design language and user experience of the RSA platform.

  • Turn complex AI video analytics into elegant dashboards, visualisations, and workflows.

  • Collaborate with full-stack developers, AI/ML researchers, and transport experts in a small, agile team.

  • Create and maintain a cohesive design system and style guide.

  • Conduct user research, workshops, and usability testing to refine experiences.

  • Ensure compliance with WCAG accessibility standards and usability best practice.

What we’re looking for

Essential

  • Degree in Design, HCI, or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years designing interfaces for SaaS or data-driven platforms.

  • Mastery of modern design tools (e.g., Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch).

  • Proven ability to make complex data intuitive.

  • Experience with responsive, accessible web applications.

  • Strong collaboration skills with developers and researchers.

  • Ability to clearly communicate design decisions across stakeholders.

  • Adaptability to thrive in a small, start-up-like team inside a university setting.

Desirable

  • Experience with maps, timelines, heatmaps, or video overlays.

  • Familiarity with design systems and developer handoff workflows.

  • Understanding of frontend frameworks (React, Vue, Angular).

  • Exposure to cloud-native SaaS platforms.

  • Interest in AI-assisted design or coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Cursor).

Why join us

  • Work on a nationally significant AI project with global impact potential.

  • See your work move beyond the lab into real-world adoption.

  • Join a tight-knit, high-performing team of developers, researchers, and architects.

  • Shape the look, feel, and usability of a platform that helps save lives and improve cities.
