About the Role

The Associate Product Designer works with the Opentrons team to achieve our mission of fostering a community platform that supports easy-to-use lab automation robots. In this role you’ll be a member of our highly collaborative design team, working on projects that empower biologists to discover, share and implement protocols to unlock bio-innovation. You will partner closely with Designers, Product Managers and Engineers to create brand new experiences for Opentrons products, as well as iterate on existing ones.

 

Here are examples of recent design projects to get a sense of the day-to-day:

?        Improving the UI of the software that controls Opentrons robots

?        Conducting UX activities like Card Sorting to improve website usability

?        Designing an experience to direct users to change the placement of labware during a protocol run

?        Opentrons Design uses Figma, Jira, Confluence and GSuite as our primary tools.

 

What You Will Do

?        Creates multiple options for ways to solve a problem, moving from low to high fidelity as project progresses

?        Leverages data and research (user data, competitor studies, and UX field literature) to support their approach(es)

?        Collaborates with stakeholders (including other designers) to get their input and support through a project

?        Participates in usability testing sessions by taking notes and being part of the synthesis process

?        Seeks out opportunities to deepen and widen design skillset

 

What We are Looking for

Education:

?        Bachelor's degree required or equivalent experience

 

Experience:

?        Minimum of 1 year experience shipping work for digital products

?        Prior experience utilizing digital design best practices to define problems and create user flows, wireframes, prototypes and high fidelity designs

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

?        Strong communicator: you know how to frame a discussion that’s perfectly tailored to your audience

?        Eager to learn complex and highly technical concepts

Compensation Range: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $85,000-$95,000 per year; base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and years of experience.   We typically target mid-range for well-qualified candidates. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including equity and full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment.
