Problem Statement

UX Design

What is a Problem Statement

A Problem Statement is a clear, concise description of the issue that needs to be solved. It defines the gap between the current state and desired state of a product or service, focusing on user needs rather than solutions.

Components of a Problem Statement

Essential elements include:

  • User Context: Who is experiencing the problem
  • Impact: Why the problem matters and its effects
  • Need: What users are trying to achieve
  • Constraints: Relevant limitations or boundaries

How to write Problem Statements

Create effective statements by being user-centered, specific, and actionable. Use the format: "[User] needs a way to [user need] because [insight]." Avoid including solutions or implementation details in the statement.

When to use Problem Statements

Develop problem statements during the initial research phase to guide design direction, align stakeholders, and maintain focus on user needs throughout the project. They're particularly valuable before brainstorming solutions or starting design work.
