GLOSSARY

Dark UX

UX Design

What is Dark UX

Dark UX (also known as "Dark Patterns") refers to deceptive design practices that manipulate users into taking actions they might not otherwise choose to take. These patterns exploit cognitive biases and psychological vulnerabilities to prioritize business goals over user interests.

Types of Dark UX

Common patterns include:

  • Misdirection: Visual manipulation to hide or obscure options
  • Forced Continuity: Making it difficult to cancel subscriptions
  • Hidden Costs: Concealing fees until late in the process

How to identify Dark UX

Look for interfaces that use manipulation techniques such as misleading language, visual tricks, time pressure, or guilt. Watch for designs that make it easy to opt in but difficult to opt out of services or subscriptions.

Why avoid Dark UX

Using Dark UX patterns damages user trust, brand reputation, and long-term business success. While they might increase short-term conversions, they typically lead to higher customer churn, negative reviews, and potential legal issues.
