GLOSSARY

Cognitive Load

UX Design

What is Cognitive Load

Cognitive Load refers to the amount of mental effort required to process information and complete tasks in an interface. It represents the total amount of mental processing power being used in the working memory.

Types of Cognitive Load

Three main types exist:

  • Intrinsic Load: Complexity inherent to the task itself
  • Extraneous Load: Additional effort caused by poor design
  • Germane Load: Effort needed to create new mental patterns

How to reduce Cognitive Load

Minimize cognitive load by using familiar patterns, breaking complex tasks into smaller steps, removing unnecessary information, and providing clear visual hierarchy. Use progressive disclosure to present information only when needed.

Why is Cognitive Load important

Managing cognitive load is crucial for creating effortless user experiences. High cognitive load can lead to user errors, frustration, and task abandonment. Reducing it improves user satisfaction, task completion rates, and overall usability.
