Cognitive Load
UX Design
What is Cognitive Load
Cognitive Load refers to the amount of mental effort required to process information and complete tasks in an interface. It represents the total amount of mental processing power being used in the working memory.
Types of Cognitive Load
Three main types exist:
- Intrinsic Load: Complexity inherent to the task itself
- Extraneous Load: Additional effort caused by poor design
- Germane Load: Effort needed to create new mental patterns
How to reduce Cognitive Load
Minimize cognitive load by using familiar patterns, breaking complex tasks into smaller steps, removing unnecessary information, and providing clear visual hierarchy. Use progressive disclosure to present information only when needed.
Why is Cognitive Load important
Managing cognitive load is crucial for creating effortless user experiences. High cognitive load can lead to user errors, frustration, and task abandonment. Reducing it improves user satisfaction, task completion rates, and overall usability.
Cognitive load can be measured through user testing metrics like task completion time, error rates, and subjective ratings. Eye-tracking and think-aloud protocols can also provide insights into mental effort.
Expert users typically experience lower cognitive load for familiar tasks due to established mental models. However, designs should accommodate both novice and expert users through progressive disclosure and shortcuts.
Some cognitive load (germane load) is necessary for learning and creating mental models. The goal is to minimize unnecessary (extraneous) load while optimizing beneficial cognitive engagement.
